How to care for Anthurium plant

Anthuriums grow upright with glossy, heart-shaped leaves and long-lasting red, pink, or white spathes that resemble waxy flowers.

  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry; keep soil lightly moist but never soggy.
  • Light and temperature: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun; thrives in 65โ€“80ยฐF.
  • Toxicity: Moderately toxic to pets and people; can cause oral irritation and swelling (ASPCA).
  • Soil and fertilizer: Use loose, peat-free mix with coco coir, orchid bark, and perlite; feed every 6 weeks with balanced liquid fertilizer.
  • One common issue: Yellowing leaves often come from overwateringโ€”allow more time between waterings.
  • Propagation method: Divide at the roots when repotting and replant each section separately.

2. Care mistakes we have learnt to avoid with anthurium plant

  • Using regular potting soil instead of a chunky mix: Anthuriums suffocate quickly in dense soil because their roots are built for airflow, not moisture retention. We mix coco coir, bark, and perlite so the roots stay airy and the plant grows thicker, glossier leaves.
  • Placing it too close to strong light: Anthuriums burn faster than we expected, especially near south- and west-facing windows. We keep ours a few feet back so it gets bright light without harsh heat, which keeps the leaves smooth and unblemished.
  • Repotting into deep or oversized pots: Their roots spread sideways, not downward, and large pots trap water at the bottom where rot starts. We use smaller, shallower pots and only repot when the plant is clearly root-bound and pushing up.
  • Watering heavily in winter when the plant isnโ€™t drinking: Anthuriums almost pause in cold months, especially with radiators drying the air. We water far less in winter and wait until the top half of the mix is dry so we donโ€™t smother the roots.

3. A real issue we have had with Anthurium plant in our home

The leaves kept getting those faint brown edges even though the soil, watering, and light all looked perfect. The real cause turned out to be the cold drafts sneaking in from our old Brooklyn windowsโ€”anthuriums hate sudden temperature dips more than we expected. We moved it a little farther from the glass, and the new leaves finally came in smooth.

lineage and Symbolism

The Anthurium (aka Anthurium andraeanum) from the Araceae family is known for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant red, pink, or white spathes. Indoors, it typically grows 12โ€“18 inches tall and wide, with blooms that can last for months!

At our Brooklyn community home, we tuck them onto bright bathroom shelves or kitchen counters where humidity stays high. With their sculptural shape and exotic sheen, they bring both bold color and polish.

Anthuriums symbolize hospitality, passion, and polished love. They align best with the zodiac sign Libraโ€”graceful, design-conscious, and craving harmony.

“Caring for this flowering plant has been straightforward, with weekly watering and some occasional misting to keep it happy.”

What we wish we knew before buying

It looks tough, but it hates still, heavy soil more than almost any plant we own: Anthuriums decline quietly if the mix isnโ€™t airy enough, and we didnโ€™t realize how quickly their roots suffocate. We thought a normal indoor mix would be fine, but the plant stalled and the leaves dulled within a month. Once we switched to a chunky coirโ€“barkโ€“perlite blend and a smaller pot, the plant finally behaved the way

Light placement and Seasons

  • Anthurium plant is best placed in spots facing the south facing window as shown in the image. spots that say medium light and bright light are good for this plant!

What is the light requirement for Anthurium plant?

Anthuriums grow best in bright, indirect light. Direct sun can scorch their leaves โ€” while too little light reduces blooming. Keep them about 2โ€“3 feet from an east-facing window or under filtered south-facing light for 8โ€“10 hours daily. Ours is currently kept a few feet away from North-east facing window.

How to know if Anthurium plant is not getting right amount of light?

Fewer flowers or slow growth suggest low light. Pale or crispy leaves mean the sun is too strong. We rotate ours every few weeks to ensure even growth and leaf health.

Where to place Anthurium plant and where to avoid?

Place your anthurium 2โ€“3 feet from a bright window in a warm room like a bathroom or kitchen. Avoid spots with cold drafts, dry air, or direct sun. Ours do best on shelves with nearby humidity-loving plants.

How Anthurium plant behaves through the seasons?

  • Spring: Growth finally picks up, and new leaves appear more regularly. We water a bit more often as the plant starts drinking again and keep it close to an east window for steady brightness. The only issue is pushing fertilizer too early, which dulls new leaves, so we feed lightly.

  • Summer: This is the plantโ€™s strongest season, with bigger leaves and more consistent blooms. We water more because the chunky mix dries faster, and we move it slightly back from harsh afternoon sun to avoid yellow patches. Heat attracts fungus gnats in dense soil, so the airy mix helps a lot.

  • Fall: Growth slows and bloom production becomes sporadic. We cut back watering and stop fertilizing because the plant starts drinking less as daylight shortens. The biggest risk is overwatering as temperatures drop, so we let the top half of the mix dry fully before watering again.

  • Winter: Growth almost stops, and the plant sits still for weeks at a time. We water sparingly and pull it away from cold windows because drafts create brown edges on new leaves. Radiator heat dries the air, so we keep the plant farther from heaters to prevent crisping.

Soil

What soil composition to use for Anthurium plant?

They prefer a chunky, loose, peat-free mix with good airflow and moisture retention. We use:

  • 2 parts orchid bark
  • 1 part coconut coir
  • 1 part perlite or pumice

This keeps the roots airy and reduces rot risk.

Best soil to use for Anthurium plant?

Our experience with this mix:
Balanced moisture and airflow: Anthuriums thrive in soil that mimics their natural habitatโ€”peaty yet well-draining. Miracleโ€‘Groโ€™s peat-and-coir formula provides moisture retention.
No root rot or compacting issues: Despite being moisture-retentive, the enhanced mix drains fast enough to prevent waterlogging. Weโ€™ve cushioned the soil with about 30% perlite or fine orchid bark to keep it airy and light.
Healthy foliage and frequent blooms: With this mix, our plants have shown richer green leaves and consistent bloom production. The slow-release nutrients from Miracleโ€‘Gro support their growth for 4โ€“6 months before needing a top-up!

Temperature and Humidity

What is the best temperature condition for Anthurium plant?

Ideal temperatures are between 65โ€“80ยฐF. Below 60ยฐF, their growth slows, and they risk shock. We keep them away from windowsills in winter and never place them near air conditioners.

What is the best humidity condition for Anthurium plant?

They love humidityโ€”60โ€“80% is best. In drier seasons, we run a humidifier or keep them in steamy bathrooms with filtered light. Grouping with other plants also helps. Pebble tray is another option. But if you group many tropical plants together, misting them together will become easy!

Our favorite humidifiers

fertilizer

What is the best fertilizer composition to use for Anthurium plant?

Use a high-phosphorus blend like 10-30-20 or 15-30-15 to support blooms. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that encourage leaf growth at the expense of flowers. Flowers really are the highlight here ๐Ÿ™‚

How and when to fertilize Anthurium plant?

Fertilize every 4โ€“6 weeks in spring and summer. We dilute to half strength and apply after watering. Avoid feeding in winter unless itโ€™s actively blooming.
DIY tip: Steep banana peel and crushed eggshells in water for 24 hours and use the liquid monthly to support flowering.

What are the signs Anthurium plant needs food?

Lack of flowers, pale new leaves, or stalled growth can all signal a need for nutrients. We resume feeding as soon as the days start getting longer.

Best fertilizer to use for Anthurium plant?

Using Plant Magic Organic Fertilizer for our Anthuriums has been a rewarding routine. Here’s how we’ve made it thrive:

  • Bloom-rich performance during active growth: Monthly feeding in spring and summer consistently resulted in fuller, longer-lasting spathes without overwhelming the plant.
  • Lush foliage without salt buildup: After each application, leaves looked stronger and deeper greenโ€”thanks to careful dilution and avoiding soil overload.
  • Gentle enough for sensitive roots: Anthuriums don’t need much, and Plant Magic gives just enough supportive nutrition without stressing their delicate root systems.

Pots and planters

What are the best pots to use for Anthurium plant?

Choose pots with good drainage and airflow. Terracotta or ceramic with holes work best. Anthuriums like being a bit root-bound, so donโ€™t size up too quickly.

Our favorite Terracotta and Ceramic pots

Watering

How and When to water Anthurium plant?

Water when the top 1โ€“2 inches feel dry. We pour slowly until water drains through, then empty the saucer. Overwatering is more dangerous than underwatering, so we always check the soil first. In winter, we cut watering to every 2โ€“3 weeks.

what are the Signs of over or under watering Anthurium plant?

Yellowing lower leaves or root rot suggest overwatering. Droopy or crispy leaves point to underwatering or dry air. We adjust humidity first, then tweak watering.

Our favorite watering cans

pruning

how to prune Anthurium plant?

Prune to remove old blooms, dead leaves, and shape the plant.

  • Use sterile scissors or snips
  • Remove faded flowers at the base
  • Trim brown or dying leaves
  • Wipe leaves clean monthly

After pruning, reduce watering slightly and keep humidity steady.

propagating

How to propagate Anthurium plant

Division is the easiest method. If you want to try something different from water propagation that is more common (as shown in our pictures above)

  • Remove the plant from its pot
  • Gently pull apart clumps with roots
  • Pot each division in fresh orchid mix
  • Water lightly and keep in indirect light

Roots reestablish within 3โ€“4 weeks. Keep humidity high while it settles.

how to care after propagating Anthurium plant?

  • Post-propagation care: Keep it in bright light but away from harsh afternoon sun. Water sparingly until you see new leaves. Once rooted, care is identical to the parent plant.

Troubleshooting common issues

Issues with Anthurium plant: yellowing, drooping, cracks on leaves, leggy stems
Top to Bottom and Left to right: Anthurium leaves yellowing, leaves cracking, stems leggy, and leaves folding in.

Why isnโ€™t my anthurium blooming?

Dry air or tap water with fluoride can cause tip burn. Use filtered water and raise humidity.

Why are my anthuriumโ€™s leaves turning yellow?

Lack of light or the plant being too young. Brighten its spot and be patientโ€”it only blooms once.

Why do my anthuriumโ€™s leaf tips turn brown?

Low humidity or mineral-heavy tap water. Use filtered water and raise humidity.

Why are the flowers of my anthurium green instead of red?

Older blooms naturally fade to green. Cut them off to encourage new ones.

Why is my anthurium leggy and sparse?

Itโ€™s stretching for light. Move closer to a window and rotate regularly.

Why are my anthuriumโ€™s leaves dull and dusty?

They need cleaning — gently wipe with a damp cloth every few weeks.

Why is my anthurium wilting after repotting?

Root shock often causes this: keep it warm, humid, and out of direct light for 1โ€“2 weeks.
